Purchasing a diamond is one of life’s significant decisions. Understanding the four Cs—carat, color, clarity, and cut—empowers you to choose a stone that will bring you joy for a lifetime.
The Four Cs Explained
Carat Weight
Carat measures a diamond’s weight. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more expensive, but carat weight alone doesn’t determine a diamond’s beauty or value.
Color
Diamonds are graded on a color scale from D (colorless) to Z (light color). The most valuable diamonds are those with no visible color, though many beautiful diamonds exist across the spectrum.
Clarity
Clarity refers to the presence or absence of inclusions and blemishes. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades clarity on a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3).
Clarity Grades:
- FL to IF: Flawless to Internally Flawless
- VVS1 to VVS2: Very, Very Slightly Included
- VS1 to VS2: Very Slightly Included (excellent choice)
- SI1 to SI2: Slightly Included
Cut
Cut is the only C controlled by humans and has the greatest impact on a diamond’s beauty. An expertly cut diamond will sparkle brilliantly, while a poorly cut diamond may appear dull regardless of its other qualities.
Finding Your Perfect Balance
There’s no single “best” diamond. The right choice depends on your priorities and budget. Many people prioritize cut and color over carat weight, choosing a slightly smaller but brilliantly sparkling stone.
At Terry Klingensmith, every diamond we select is hand-chosen for its exceptional qualities. We’re happy to guide you through this process and find a stone that matches your vision and values.
